France captain Kylian Mbappé has strongly condemned racist remarks made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after France secured a 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16 at the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
Mbappé, who scored the winning penalty on Saturday, described Amarilla as a "despicable woman" who was "unworthy" of serving in Paraguay's Congress after she posted racist comments about his origins, upbringing, education and appearance on X.
In a statement shared on the social media platform on Monday, Mbappé said: "Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman, and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition."
He continued: "Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country."
