The record will show that Argentina beat Egypt 3-2 in their Round of 16 match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the African nation came perilously close to creating a unique piece of history at the quadrennial showpiece.

The Pharaohs looked to be heading into the quarter-finals after taking a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute, before Argentina produced a stunning late comeback to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.

It was a cruel end to a campaign that had briefly looked destined to include the vanquishing of the defending champions, and it would truly have been a victory for the ages.

Instead, in years to come, few outside the African continent may remember just how close Argentina came to being dumped out of the World Cup by African opposition.
