Drone from Upper Bavaria: The municipality of Hallbergmoos near Munich is allowing the defense company Helsing to build its drones there. In a vote, the residents voted in favor of the project.
With a clear majority of 59 to 41 percent, they voted in favor of the project. “The citizens of Hallbergmoos have recognized the great economic opportunities and our responsibility to strengthen Germany's defense capabilities,” commented Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger (Freie Wähler).
Helsing has secured a 250,000 square meter site in the municipality north of Munich, near the airport, as Bayerischer Rundfunk reported some time ago. However, in the first phase, only just under half of the area, 120,000 square meters, is to be built on. In total, Helsing wants to invest a three-digit million euro amount in the factory. The new factory is expected to create around 300 jobs.
First European Defense Unicorn
Helsing is one of the most valuable European unicorns in the defense sector – a unicorn is a startup valued at more than one billion euros or US dollars. Helsing surpassed this mark in 2023, two years after its founding.
