The Udupi district police checking vehicles carrying school children during a special drive held on Tuesday across the district.

The Udupi police carried out a drive on Tuesday, where they checked 483 school vehicles and booked 203 vehicles for different traffic violations.As many as 112 vehicles were found carrying an excess number of children, while in 58 vehicles, the drivers were not wearing the correct uniforms. There were 33 other traffic violations found during the drive related to school vehicles. A total of ₹71,000 in fines was collected.In a press release, Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said the drive was conducted following directions by Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader, during the meeting held in Udupi on July 4, to keep a watch on vehicles carrying school children.The special drive was held on Tuesday across all stations in Udupi district. Apart from school vehicles, the police checked vans, auto rickshaws, and other vehicles in which children travel to school. The police checked for vehicle documents, fitness certificates, vehicle insurance, safety mechanisms in school vehicles, first aid kits, firefighting equipment, emergency exits, and the excess carrying of students.While booking cases for violations, the vehicle drivers, conductors, and school management representatives were asked to strictly comply with norms related to the safety of school children.
