While facing Scotland and experiencing Loftus Versfeld at Test level will be a new adventure for Springbok wing Edwill van der Merwe this weekend, the faces on the other side will be all too familiar.
Van der Merwe has never played against the Scots, nor has he run onto Loftus for the Springboks. He will do both on Saturday (kick-off 5.40pm) as the Boks look to secure a consecutive victory in the Nations Championship after dispatching England this past weekend 45-21.
Previously, the 30-year old has played five Tests — twice against Italy, and once each against Australia, Georgia and Wales. He has scored five tries in those matches, having failed to cross the whitewash only against the Wallabies.
It has been nearly a year since Van der Merwe received his last cap — ostensibly due to injury and a return to form — so this weekend’s clash against the Scots is an important one for Van der Merwe and his ambitions to cement himself as a Bok regular.
