The liver, cornea, and skin of a 76-year-old brain-dead woman from Gangolli, Udupi district, were donated on Monday.The liver was transplanted into a needy patient at Kasturba Hospital in Manipal, while the cornea and skin were sent to the cornea and skin banks in Mangaluru.In a press release, the hospital said Jenny D’Souza was brought to the hospital after loss of consciousness, following a sudden spell of giddiness, caused by massive bleeding in the brain. Despite efforts to help her, the woman was unable to regain consciousness. The hospital followed protocol and declared her brain dead.As her family agreed to donate her organs, the hospital alerted the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, Jeevasarthakathe, which initiated the process of the removal of organs. The hospital coordinated with the Jeevasarthakathe team members in the extraction and transplantation, the hospital said.The hospital expressed gratitude to the donor’s family and thanked the teams involved in treating the patient and the transplant coordinators.
