The number of people being paid disability benefits with ADHD has soared by 40 per cent since Labour took power, according to official statistics.Data from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) shows there were 100,207 claimants of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in which ADHD was cited as the main condition in April this year. This was up from 71,528 claimants in July 2024, when Labour came to office with a landslide general election victory.PIP is the main disability benefit in England and Wales and is paid on top of most other benefits and comes with no requirement to look for work.More than four in 10 (45 per cent) of those claiming PIP for ADHD - or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder - in April this year were entitled to the top rate of both the daily living and mobility component of the benefit, which is £194.60 per week. The data also shows more than half of the 100,207 claimants of PIP with ADHD in April this year were aged between 16 and 24.It came as Tory leader Kemi Badenoch renewed her demand for Labour to slash Britain's ballooning welfare bill in order to boost defence spending.Stephen Timms, the disability minister, is expected to soon publish an interim report in his review of PIP. He this week said there was a 'strong case' for change in how PIP assessments are conducted.
