Network vendor Nokia has won a contract to support Orange Belgium's optical network upgrades.Nokia noted that it is the sole supplier for Orange Belgium's network upgrades, which will see Nokia transform the operator’s transport infrastructure, unifying fixed and mobile networks into a single, converged optical transport network across Belgium.Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, though Nokia states that the agreement is part of a multi-year project that aims to modernize the Belgian operator's infrastructure.Orange Belgium serves more than 3.5 million mobile customers and one million fixed broadband customers across the country and neighboring Luxembourg. This will see Orange Belgium consolidate its fixed and mobile transport infrastructure into a single network, while Nokia's AI-powered WaveSuite automation will support the carrier to "streamline network management, improve operational efficiency, and accelerate the time-to-market for new services."According to Nokia, the upgrades to the optical network will transport Orange's fixed and mobile traffic from customer-provided equipment through metro access and backbone infrastructure, supporting services from 1G to 400G and beyond, as demand for AI-driven services continues to grow. The modernization of the carrier's network is also Nokia's first deployment of its high-capacity 1830 PSS platform within an Orange affiliate for core optical transport."As AI becomes the defining workload of the digital economy, networks can no longer rely on linear growth or legacy architectures," said Guil Yazdi, VP, client executive, Orange at Nokia."By delivering leading optical networking solutions, Nokia is helping Orange Belgium build the resilient, AI-ready connectivity platform it needs to innovate, support new machine-to-machine and autonomous services, and deliver superior customer experiences for years to come."
