Chinese mobile services firm FingerMotion has pivoted to AI data centers, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BlueFlare Energy Solutions for the first of two project sites in Canada.The initial site, located in Alberta, will be a 600kW behind-the-meter facility, a redevelopment of a site currently in use for Bitcoin mining and powered by on-site generation using flared gas.The redeveloped site will be a dedicated AI inference facility with new on-site power generation, battery energy storage, and high-performance compute (HPC) capacity. The site will also maintain its bitcoin mining load.FingerMotion said power allocation between the two workloads would be managed by BlueFlare via its adaptive load architecture platform. BlueFlare will also provide a wireless link for the site.With on-site generation and BlueFlare’s load architecture and connectivity, FingerMotion hopes to bring the site online without waiting for grid interconnection or fiber connection.In a statement, FingerMotion said recent discussions were aimed at advancing the site towards development under the agreement, though current discussions are non-binding and no commercial term sheet or any other agreement with respect to the site has been agreed by the companies.The second site covered by the MoU will be located in Saskatchewan.FingerMotion describes itself as an “evolving technology company,” with core competencies in mobile payment and recharge platform solutions. The company says it is now developing “value-added technologies” to market to its users.Since its listing on the Nasdaq in 2021, the mobile services firm has worn a number of hats, including providing services for “big data insights,” bitcoin, and now AI. The company currently has a market capitalization of $24 million, with shares worth $0.40 at the time of writing.Canada-based BlueFlare is a developer of behind-the-meter energy and HPC infrastructure. It describes itself as a vertically integrated energy platform, with a claimed focus on community engagement and environmental stewardship, including responsible energy utilization and emissions reduction.
