SportFootballWorld Cup 2026FIFA appear set to review another controversial World Cup decision with France making a clear Michael Olise request after his booking08:16, 07 Jul 2026France have requested for Michael Olise's yellow card against Paraguay to be overturned after FIFA suspended Folarin Balogun's ban at the World Cup. Olise was booked following an altercation with Matias Galarza that left the latter holding his face, but replays showed the France star only had hold of his shirt. While he was not sent off, the yellow card could still impact Didier Deschamps' side as another caution for Olise in the quarter-final against Morocco will see him suspended for a potential semi-final. According to ESPN, the French Football Federation made it clear they would be appealing the controversial booking.Given the evidence, it is understood that France are of the belief Olise's yellow card should be clear. Their decision to launch an appeal also stems from USA star Balogun having his red card suspended for a year which allowed him to play in their round of 16 clash against Belgium.Even with their striker eligible to feature, the co-host nation were comfortably beaten 4-1 and the controversy heavily dominated the lead up to that knockout tie. U.S. President Donald Trump, FIFA president Gianni Infantino and several World Cup nations have all weighed in with the latter duo mentioned in each others statements.Trump confirmed that he spoke with Infantino about the fact Balogun's red card should be overturned while the latter responded that the incident would be reviewed by an independent commission. Belgium meanwhile, released several angry statements while Bosnia and Herzegovina, who Balogun was dismissed against, labelled the U-turn as “disgraceful”.England boss Thomas Tuchel also weighed in on the drama and while he did admit that Balogun should not have been sent off, he was left bemused by how the decision was overturned. He also suggested that yellow cards for Olise and Declan Rice should be removed.Get the latest World Cup news straight to your inbox by signing up to our Make Football Great Again newsletter now!Unsurprisingly, an appeal over Jarell Quansah's red card against Mexico is also under consideration by the FA. He was sent off for a late challenge following a VAR review and is set to be banned for England's upcoming quarter-final against Norway.Rice, Nico O'Reilly and Marc Guehi are at risk of being suspended for a potential semi-final if they are shown yellows against Erling Haaland's side.Jordan Henderson has already been ruled out of both games and the remainder of the tournament after suffering a freak arm injury which requires surgery.Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
