Sir, – On Thursday we were treated to an interview with Michael O’Leary in which he said: “You desperately need to have Ryanair operating in your marketplace otherwise you are going to be fried alive” (“Michael O’Leary: ‘In 10 years’ time, Ryanair fares will be €45-€50 and I’ll be in a home for the bewildered’”, Business, July 3rd).It was an interesting choice of words in a week where the area around Carcassonne Airport (where Ryanair has a monopoly) is aflame with intense forest fires that have forced several Irish holidaymakers to flee burning campsites. In the same interview O’Leary said Ryanair, Europe’s most polluting airline, aims to double passenger numbers over the next decade, increasing the amount of aviation fuel it burns. Meanwhile, Europe is burning, temperature records are being broken across the Continent and it is projected that up to 20,000 people may have died as a result of the heat. At what point do we recognise the role that aviation has in worsening the effects of the climate emergency and start to seriously challenge the unfettered growth in emissions? – Yours, etc,CIARÁN FERRIE,Rathmines,Dublin 6.
Interesting choice of words from Ryanair chief as Europe burns
When will we start to seriously challenge the unfettered growth in emissions?
