Europe’s defence readiness requires more than just buying weapons.
As Brussels pushes EU countries towards their 2030 defence readiness goals, attention is beginning to shift from simple procurement to how Europe’s defence industry can remain ready after today’s spending surge slows.
“We need a model that covers costs for us to be able to ramp up production at a moment’s notice,” Eirik Lie, CEO of the Norwegian defence company Kongsberg, told Euractiv.
For some, a so-called subscription model would fit the bill. But mention it inside Europe’s defence bubble, and the conversation quickly turns into a debate.
