Two major projects, which will be bankrolled through national and European Union funds, are expected to create an integrated chain for the capture, transport and underground storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in Greece.

Core projects by the Natural Gas National System Operator (DESFA) in Revythoussa, off the island of Salamina, and EnEarth’s project in the Prinos field, off the island of Thassos, form part of the broader APOLLOCO2 project.

The latter has been included in the EU’s Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) and relates to industries that do not have the technological ability to reduce CO2 emissions and are therefore burdened by the associated costs. APOLLOCO2’s aim is to capture CO2 and transport it through pipelines to Revithoussa, where it will be liquefied, loaded onto ships and transported to Prinos for storage at a depth of 2,500-3,600 meters in the depleted Prinos deposit.

The aim is to take the final investment decision and begin drilling in 2027. Last week, DESFA and the European Commission signed a funding agreement worth €169.3 million from the Innovation Fund for the construction of a liquefaction unit, temporary CO2 storage facilities and CO2 extraction at Revithoussa, which already has existing cryogenic infrastructure.
