Sending off: The USA star received a straight red card for serious foul play following a video assistant referee (VAR) review against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their last-32 clash.
Replays showed his foot catching an opponent's upper ankle, triggering an automatic one-game ban despite widespread criticism that the sending off was harsh.
No appeal: Unlike in regular league seasons, there is no opportunity for nations to appeal a red card they feel wasn't fair.
So it looked as though Mauricio Pochettino would have to make do without his star striker against Belgium.
Loophole: However, out of the blue, FIFA chose to suspend the one-game ban for a year, keeping the red card on his record but leaving him eligible for the round of 16.
