President Donald Trump's relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino goes back further than a phone call at the center of a World Cup red card controversy.U.S. Men's National Soccer Team forward Folarin Balogun received a red card and was booted from the July 1 game against Bosnia and Herzegovina after coming down on a defender's ankle. The red card came with an automatic one-game suspension that would have meant Balogun would have had to watch the U.S.A. vs Belgium Round of 16 game from the bench. But that punishment was suspended by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on July 5 in a surprising turn.Trump confirmed reports on July 6 that he called Infantino asking for a review, as he believed it was not a foul."I'm the one that got them to do it. It was not Biden," Trump said while answering questions at a July 6 event on Trump Accounts. FIFA also has a US office in the Miami area. The New York Times reported last month that the New York office is largely unused.Trump Tower has also housed other people involved with FIFA − an informant in the FIFA corruption scandal had two apartments: one for him and another for his cats, according to Pro Soccer Wire. Another person involved in the scandal spent his house arrest at Trump Tower, the outlet reported.Trump went viral on stage at FIFA Club World CupTrump went viral last summer while celebrating on stage at the FIFA Club World Cup on July 13, 2025.Trump received boos and some cheers as he joined Infantino on the pitch at MetLife Stadium, helping congratulate players and give some awards. When the Chelsea players gathered to celebrate and raise the trophy, Trump remained among the players, one of whom admitted he was confused as to why Trump was still with them. Infantino eventually pulled Trump behind the players.Infantino has also said Trump will co-present the winning trophy for the World Cup on July 19.Did Trump call Infantino about the red card?Yes.
