It was in 1958 when seven farmers from the prefecture of Ioannina decided to take up poultry farming, through the creation of a small cooperative, as a means of supplementing their incomes. This was the beginning of the establishment of the Agricultural Poultry Cooperative of Ioannina, known as Pindos.
As it enters the fourth generation of poultry farmers, it now has 600 members and rising. Its employees exceed 1,700, production tops 1 million chickens per week, its products are available at 8,000 points of sale, it has a fleet of 250 trucks and its yearly turnover approaches €500 million.
Pindos is not only Greece’s strongest cooperative, but also the largest poultry farming producer, and among the country’s top five food industries. As for borrowing, in end-2025, it was at €16.8 million, down by €54.18 million in the last three years.
Today it boasts poultry farms with a total area of 600,000 m2, 400,000 breeding hens, 55 million broiler chickens and a factory for hatching, feed production and abattoir. It also produces ready cooked and frozen products, as well as organochemical fertilizers using the waste from other production processes.
