The shooting occurred around 4 a.m. after soldiers and local police pursued an armed individual who allegedly turned toward the guardsmen with a weapon. Tyrin Johnson, 20, was identified as the man killed, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating the circumstances of the incident. The National Guard's deployment to Memphis last fall, part of a federal initiative, has been supported by Gov. Bill Lee but opposed by Mayor Paul Young and other local officials.
