Operators and crew members of mini-buses at the awareness programme held in Madurai on Monday.
Madurai City Traffic Police and officials from Department of Transport conducted an awareness programme for mini-bus operators and crew members on following road safety rules, on Monday.A statement said that the meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S. Vanitha, was organised as data revealed that mini-buses were involved in frequent road accidents in the city.Besides, these buses were causing hindrance to free flow of vehicular movement by blocking the carriage way.The officials also involved the bus operators, the managers, drivers and conductors in the awareness programme aimed at operating the buses in a safe manner, the statement said.The City Traffic Police were already taking stringent action against violators of road safety rules.A total of 167 riders/drivers who were caught using vehicles under the influence of alcohol were booked and produced before the courts in the last one week. A fine amount of ₹16.70 lakh has been imposed on them.Similarly, 2,967 two-wheeler riders and 345 pilion riders were also booked for not wearing helmet, the statement added. A drive against irregular registration number plates was under way. Vehicles with such number plates were spared only after the owners rectify them, the statement said.
