Supply of memory chips would remain tight next year, as major chipmakers allocate less capacity for general-purpose memory, Adata chairman Simon Chen said

Contract chipmaker United Microelectronics Corp (UMC, 聯電) yesterday posted sequential growth of 12.58 percent in revenue for the second quarter, thanks to robust customer demand and higher prices. Revenue expanded to NT$68.72 billion (US$2.15 billion) during the April-to-June period, up from NT$61.04 billion in the previous quarter and the highest in more than three years. The company in April estimated blended average selling prices would rise by a low-single-digit percentage sequentially during the quarter, mostly driven by its 22-nanometer and 28-nanometer chips, saying that it would hike prices in the second half of the year to reflect higher operating costs of raw materials, energy and logistics.
