Nurses from six private hospitals in Kannur on Monday (July 6) launched an indefinite protest in front of the Collectorate after conciliation talks could not be held as hospital owners failed to attend a meeting convened by the Regional Joint Labour Commissioner, despite being directed to appear in person.Organised by the Indian Nurses Association (INA), the agitation was inaugurated by District Congress Committee president Martin George. Backing the agitation, Mr. George termed the protest entirely justified, saying private hospital nurses were among the most overworked yet underpaid healthcare workers.Addressing the media, INA State vice-president Tejimol alleged widespread violations of nursing recruitment norms in private hospitals and accused the Health department of failing to enforce regulations.Ms. Tejimol demanded the constitution of a special inspection squad to verify staff licences, ensure hospitals employed the mandated number of registered nurses, investigate the alleged violations and initiate legal action against offenders.The agitation is being led by INA State general secretary E.M.
