The conciliation talks convened by the Regional Joint Labour Commissioner (RJLC) in Kozhikode on Saturday (July 4) to resolve the 50-day-old strike by nurses in six private hospitals in Kannur district failed to take off after the hospital owners did not turn up despite being directed to attend the meeting. With the employers absent, the nurses’ representatives returned without holding discussions, prompting the Indian Nurses Association (INA) and the Joint Strike Support Committee to intensify the agitation.Following this, the Joint Strike Support Committee decided to launch an indefinite protest in front of the Kannur Collectorate from Monday (July 6) while continuing the ongoing agitation outside the six hospitals. A section of the striking nurses from all six hospitals will participate in the Collectorate protest, while demonstrations outside the hospitals will continue as before, the INA said. The Joint Strike Support Committee also urged the government to initiate immediate legal action against the hospital managements concerned based on a report submitted by the Labour department, which reportedly found violations of labour laws during inspections at various hospitals. The committee demanded action against the hospitals found responsible for violating labour laws and called for justice for the striking nurses. The INA Kannur district committee said the agitation would continue and be intensified until the nurses’ legitimate demands were accepted and their legal labour rights were protected.
