Nurses under the banner of the United Nurses Association stage a sit-in on the road after police stopped their march to Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute in Thrissur
The wage dispute involving nurses at private hospitals in Thrissur escalated on Monday, with the United Nurses Association (UNA) announcing that it would launch a round-the-clock protest at the Amala Institute of Medical Sciences from Monday night while warning of a district-wide strike if its demands remain unmet. The organisation said the agitation, which has so far been centred on the Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute, would be held at Amala Hospital too. It warned that if no decision was taken on its demands within 48 hours, nurses in private hospitals across the district would resort to an indefinite strike, which could later be expanded into a State-wide agitation. The announcement came hours after hundreds of nurses, under the banner of the United Nurses Association, marched to Jubilee Mission Medical College Hospital, demanding an early settlement of the wage revision issue.Denies claimMeanwhile, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the nurses’ agitation at the hospital had ended and that a salary revision had been agreed upon.In an official statement, Fr. Julius Arackal CMI, Director of the hospital, termed the reports “completely false” and clarified that no discussions or decisions had taken place at the hospital in recent days regarding the agitation or wage revision. He said the hospital had informed the District Labour Officer that it was prepared to participate only in joint discussions involving both Jubilee Mission and Amala hospitals, given the common issues under dispute.
