Berlin aims to hit NATO's defence spending goal six years early

Germany will ramp up defence spending by a third next year, with a draft budget allocating €109.7 billion to the military in 2027.

The proposal comes ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara on Tuesday and Wednesday, where allied leaders will review progress on last year’s pledge to spend 3.5% of GDP on defence, plus another 1.5% on security infrastructure by 2035.

The proposed defence budget would put Berlin on track to meet the alliance’s target by 2029, six years ahead of NATO’s agreed deadline.

Overall, the federal budget is expected to reach €555.4 billion, financed with around €200 billion in debt, according to the draft budget seen by Euractiv.
