The East Coast Coconut Farmers’ Association, Peravurani, has sought a coconut based industrial park at Peravurani-Pattukottai region for the benefit of coconut cultivators. In a memorandum submitted to Agriculture Minister R. Vinoth of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, the association pointed out that a regulated market hall, a godown, and a drying yard had been proposed at a cost of ₹4.50 crore at Peravurani.Seeking early allocation of funds for this proposal, the association appealed to the State government to procure dehusked coconuts through agriculture marketing committees as was being done in Kerala.Further, establishing a Coconut Industrial Park through a public-private partnership (PPP) module in this region would not only benefit the coconut growers but also augment employment opportunities for others, it added.Setting up a coastal saline research institute at Peravurani to find a lasting solution to the issue of rise in the presence of total dissolved solids in the groundwater due to seawater intrusion, allowing toddy tapping, and sale and distribution of coconut oil through public distribution system, GI tag for Peravurani coconuts, extension of rejuvenation and replanting (RR) scheme and the laying out of demonstration plots (LODP) scheme of the Coconut Development Board to all districts, were other demands put forth by the Association in the memorandum.
