Tottenham Hotspur just dropped £100 million on a single midfielder. Sandro Tonali, the 26-year-old Italian international, has completed a move from Newcastle United in what amounts to the biggest transfer in Spurs’ history.
The deal breaks down to a fixed fee of £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in add-ons tied to Champions League qualification. Tonali is expected to sign a six-year contract running through 2032, with wages reported at £300,000 per week.
De Zerbi’s pitch won the day
Manchester City were reportedly interested in Tonali, but Tonali chose Tottenham instead, and he’s credited Roberto De Zerbi as the decisive factor in that decision.
De Zerbi, who recently took charge at Spurs as part of a broader rebuild, apparently sold Tonali on a vision for the club’s midfield. Tonali’s signing is part of a wider squad overhaul at Tottenham, with the Italian coach intent on stamping his tactical identity onto the team.
