Canadian data center firm Beacon has revealed its hopes to build a campus in Alabama. The company has detailed plans for the Calvert Infrastructure Hub outside Calvert in Mobile County.Calvert is an unincorporated community in the southwest corner of Alabama, some 35 miles north of the city of Mobile. The company says the campus will be developed on 95 acres on a 650-acre lot between Highway 43 and Shepard House Road. Two buildings and an on-site substation are planned. The first building could go live next year.“The project represents a major long-term investment in the region, bringing high-quality jobs, infrastructure development, and new economic opportunity to the Gulf Coast while strengthening Alabama's role in the future of advanced technology infrastructure,” Beacon said on its website. The site is reportedly designed to operate without backup diesel generators and will use a closed-loop cooling system to reduce water use. Beacon has said the project won’t require new power lines and the company will pay for any upgrades to the local grid infrastructure.Investment firm Nadia Partners quietly launched Beacon AI Centers (also known as Beacon Data Centers) in March 2023.Beacon claims its portfolio includes more than six campuses in development representing 6GW of planned capacity, with projects planned in Alberta and New Brunswick, Canada; Tom Green County, Texas; Kern County, California; and Calvert, Alabama. Several planned projects have seemingly been removed from the company’s website. The firm is working with oil and gas company California Resources Corporation (CRC) to develop a large behind-the-meter data center campus outside Bakersfield in California.
