QTS, a data centre developer owned by private equity form Blackstone, has abandoned plans for a massive 2,100-acre data centre complex in Virginia, following years of opposition from residents.

The company had planned to build its portion of the project on some 800 acres in Prince William County in northern Virginia in an area that was formerly protected from development, and is near an historic Civil War battlefield.

Compass Datacenters, which was collaborating on the project and was also planning to build on more than 800 acres under the “Digital Gateway” plan, pulled out in May.
