Wang met with Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) in Helsinki on Sunday afternoon before talks with President Alexander Stubb.The two foreign ministers discussed the war in Ukraine, EU-China relations and other issues.At a press conference afterwards, Valtonen described the meeting as successful. She said that she had conveyed to Wang Finland's view of the current situation in Russia's war of aggression against Kyiv."China's support for Russia does not contribute to ending the war," she said."I feel that our message about China's support for Russia's war of aggression is being received. In this current situation, the messages from Finland and Europe more broadly are of great importance," Valtonen told Yle.China is a key backer of Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, although publicly the Chinese leadership has sought to take a neutral line on the war.Valtonen says she thanked China for its statements that the war must not escalate."I believe that China sees that Russia's power is ultimately quite weak," Valtonen said.Valtonen declined to say what Wang said about the themes discussed at the meeting, saying only that "China takes the situation very seriously".There was also no word on whether the ministers had discussed a Chinese official's recent warning to the Finnish Embassy in Beijing about its annual 'Rainbow Run' as part of Beijing Diversity Week.Stubb, Valtonen to Nato summit in AnkaraIn the evening, Wang travelled to Naantali, southwest Finland, to hold talks with Stubb at his official summer residence, Kultaranta.On Saturday, Wang met with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Stockholm after a visit to Copenhagen. His weeklong Nordic tour wraps up on Tuesday in Oslo.The previous visit to Finland by a Chinese Foreign Minister was in 2004. Earlier this year, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) visited Beijing, where he met with Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao and other officials.On Tuesday, Stubb, Valtonen and Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (NCP) head to Ankara for a Nato Summit, along with other leaders including the US and Ukrainian presidents.
