Demand for the construction of an underpass at Mukkali (Harbour Mukkali) on the National Highway near Vadakara in Kozhikode is growing. The Vadakara Taluk Development Committee has urged the government to take immediate steps to construct the underpass.The committee said an underpass was essential, as hundreds of fishermen work in the area, heavy vehicles frequently ply the route to the harbour, and several educational institutions and places of worship are located nearby.The committee also decided to convene a meeting of elected representatives of local bodies and officials of the departments concerned to discuss issues in implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission. Elected representatives at the meeting highlighted the hardships caused by road excavation for the scheme.Nadapuram grama panchayat president M. Safeera and committee member P.P. Rajan raised concerns over roads being dug up during the monsoon in violation of norms, leading to accidents and disruptions in drinking water supply.Committee member P.M. Musthafa called for urgent measures to address the unsafe condition of several ageing buildings in Vadakara municipality. He said the structures include the fish market building owned by the Vadakara municipality, Dwaraka building, Vadakara bus stand building, and library building near the court. Mr. Musthafa said many of these buildings pose a threat to public safety.Vadakara municipal authorities informed that an expert team led by the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C), along with the municipality’s engineering wing, would inspect the buildings and recommend remedial measures.Kavilumpara grama panchayat president sought compensation for people who suffered losses due to heavy rain and strong winds that recently hit Kavilumpara.
