Greece broke its transplant donor record in 2025, with 13.1 donors per million of the population and 367 transplants, marking a significant rise from 5.5 donors per million and 226 procedures in 2019, according to official figures.

The Hellenic Transplant Organization (EOM) also saw its national register of organ and tissue donors increase by 30,000 new additions, bringing the total to above 57,000.

These increases bring the country closer to the target of reaching the European Union average of 20-25 per million, thanks to a combination of better public awareness and improvements in the system.

In one of the most recent procedures, the parents of an infant who was fatally injured in a traffic accident agreed to donate their child’s organs.

On June 23, the baby’s heart was delivered to a team of Italian doctors from the Regina Margherita children’s hospital in Turin, and the kidneys went to the Laiko General Hospital in Athens.
