Plans put forward to grow the Pietermaritzburg airport
A new masterplan for Pietermaritzburg Airport has outlined an ambitious path for the facility that aims to increase traffic to more than a million people annually in the coming years.
The masterplan details numerous scenarios for growth and the investment required, revealing that the airport has massive potential for growth, especially in the Umgungundlovu District.
The document outlines the current state of infrastructure, the different phases of growth, and the various amounts of investment needed to reach each growth target. The ultimate goal for the airport is to attract 1.2 million travellers each year.
This new masterplan has been welcomed by municipal councillors, who argue that the development of the airport is a priority. It outlines several changes that will be required to increase the capacity of the airport, including investment in land for expansion, upgrades to the runway, and improvements to infrastructure such as water sanitation and road access around the airport.
