Following a career-stalling injury, Springbok loose forward Cameron Hanekom is ready to kickstart his international career with the world champions.
Springbok loose foward Cameron Hanekom still experiences some discomfort and pain from the torn hamstring injury he suffered in the 2024 United Rugby Championship (URC) semi-final against the Sharks in Pretoria.
At the time, it was an injury he feared had ended his career. But through determination, lengthy rehabilitation and several setbacks, the Ceres-born loose forward fought his way back to the highest level. Despite the lingering pain, Hanekom earned his second Test cap for the world champions against England on Saturday in the Nations Championship.
Hanekom explained this week that he genuinely believed his career was over after he was cleaned out at a ruck by Springbok captain Siya Kolisi during that fateful URC clash.
“Getting injured in that semi-final, I basically thought my career was over. That’s how it felt back then,” he said.
