Raphinha could play a limited role from the bench in Brazil’s World Cup round-of-16 match against Norway, head coach Carlo Ancelotti said.Forward Raphinha, 29, missed Brazil’s final group-stage win against Scotland and the round-of-32 victory over Japan after he was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury in the 40th minute of the 3-0 win over Haiti on June 19.Lucas Paqueta, meanwhile, has started all four matches so far, but was substituted at half-time against Japan on Monday due to injury, with Ancelotti discussing potential replacements for the attacking midfielder when speaking on Saturday.Ahead of Sunday’s last-16 fixture against Norway, Ancelotti said Raphinha is “making great progress” but the Barcelona player is “not 100 per cent”.“He might be on the bench to play a few minutes so we might be able use him,” Ancelotti said. “But he is recovering very fast and we are very happy. That’s because he is a very important player for our team.”The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) said Tuesday that Paqueta would undergo “an intensive treatment programme” after scans revealed a “muscle injury to the back of his left ‌thigh”.Ancelotti discussed his potential replacements for the last-16 match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.“We have players in our squad with the quality of Paqueta but each with different characteristics, like Danilo, who is different from (Gabriel) Martinelli, from (Matheus) Cunha, from Ederson,” Ancelotti said.“The choice will depend on how our team plays, taking into account the opponent’s strength. Defensively, we need someone on the left like Paqueta, and both Martinelli and Danilo can do that. With the ball, they need to effectively fill the left midfield role.”Brazil legend Neymar has been restricted to just one substitute appearance so far in the tournament — playing around 20 minutes in the 3-0 win against Scotland — marking his first international appearance since he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in a friendly against Uruguay in October 2023.Neymar completed the match alongside Vinicius Junior, who played the full 90 minutes and scored twice, with Ancelotti adding that the pair “could play together at some point”.
