Gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada observed ‘Swachhata Shanivar’ on Saturday by clearing roadside waste. As many as nine gram panchayats in Kadaba taluk cleaned a 45-km stretch of the Uppinangady-Kukke Subramanya State Highway passing through the taluk.Both sides of the highway were cleaned within the jurisdiction of the nine gram panchayats of Koila, Ramakunja, Alankar, Perabe, Kutrupady, Aittur, Bilinele, Mardala and Kukke Subrahmanya, with the cooperation of various organisations. A cleanliness pledge was also taken as part of the drive.A cleanliness drive was also conducted in Kadaba Town Panchayat. Shopkeepers were told not to dump garbage in front of their shops, but to dispose of it in designated places.Naveen Bhandari, Executive Officer, Kadaba Taluk Panchayat; Dombayya Idkidu, District Consultant, Zilla Panchayat Swachh Bharat Mission; representatives of Odiyur Sangha, Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, Rotary Club, Lions Club and Shaurya Team, officials from different government departments and cooperative societies, self-help groups, anganwadi workers, auto drivers, traders, and other civil society members took part in the drive.Elsewhere in other taluks, garbage was removed from both sides of roads, grass was cut and plastic bottles were removed from water bodies in Puttur, Bantwal, Mangaluru, Moodbidri, Mulki, Belthangady, Ullal and Sullia taluks.Through gram panchayats, the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat has filed over 190 cases so far this year for dumping garbage in public places and imposed a penalty of ₹2.90 lakh on offenders.
