The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense (HUR) reported the destruction of a Russian MiG-29 fighter jet and an airfield power unit at the Belbek military airfield in occupied Crimea. According to a statement released by the HUR on Saturday, July 4, the operation occurred during the night of June 26. The agency stated that specialists from its Unmanned Systems Department conducted the attack. The HUR reported that the drone strike destroyed the MiG-29 and an airfield launching unit, which was reportedly servicing the combat aircraft at the time of the impact. The agency estimated the financial losses incurred by the Russian military from this incident to be in the tens of millions of dollars. Broader campaign against Russian aviation in Crimea The attack on the Belbek airfield aligns with an ongoing Ukrainian campaign targeting Russian aviation assets and military infrastructure on the occupied peninsula. On Friday, July 3, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that its drones struck the Saky and Gvardiyske air bases. The SBU stated that seven hangars storing aviation equipment, including Su-30SM, Su-30, and Su-24 aircraft, were hit at the Saky facility. Preliminary data indicated at least seven aircraft were destroyed or damaged.
