Burnt vehicles at the entrance of the apartment building of Afroditi Nestora in Thessaloniki after Wednesday's arson attack.
The police compile a case file on assaults carried out with an ideological pretext by extremist groups – mainly self-styled anarchists – every five days on average, according to figures compiled by the Attica Police Directorate and published on Friday.
In 2024, for example, Attica’s police services compiled 78 case files for arson attacks, vandalism and inciting riots. One incident, in June, involved the firebombing of the home of the Supreme Court’s then chief justice, Ioanna Klapa.
In 2025, the number of case files submitted by the services of the Attica Police Directorate for offenses of a similar type was 72. In Thessaloniki, an assault against New Democracy MP Stratos Simopoulos involved an improvised incendiary device placed at the entrance of his apartment building. Responsibility was claimed by an organization calling itself Cell of Revolutionary Violence.
This year, there have been 41 such cases so far, including against the Administrative Court of First Instance in Athens’ Ambelokipi district, which resulted in three arrests.
