Thick fog and cold weather covered Afiamalu early Saturday, with temperatures dropping to 18 degrees Celsius.

The heavy fog reduced visibility on several roads, forcing drivers to slow down as they travelled through the area.

Tiavi resident Peni Taito said the cold has become part of daily life for people living in the highlands.

"There's hardly any time for the place to get warm," he said. "Even during the day it still feels cold. This morning I had to wear two jackets, boots and thick socks just to stay warm."

Afiamalu resident Lemalu Alofaifo said Saturday morning was one of the coldest he had experienced recently.
