The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has warned that the conflict in Sudan risks spiralling further as the strategically important town of El Obeid comes under relentless drone attacks by advancing paramilitary forces.
Speaking on Friday at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Türk called for urgent action by world leaders to halt the fighting, which has already triggered a massive humanitarian crisis in Sudan and neighbouring countries.
He said mass atrocities against civilians have become a defining feature of the conflict since it erupted in 2023.
Türk revealed that within just three weeks, his office documented 15 drone strikes on El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, and its surrounding areas, killing at least 45 civilians.
According to him, the attacks carried out amid the conflict involving the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces have repeatedly targeted civilian infrastructure.
