The Delhi government has cleared a ₹8,300-crore “Clean Air, Healthy Delhi” project to address air pollution in the national capital, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Friday. The initiative will be supported by the World Bank and other multilateral institutions. The seven-year project, prepared by the Environment Department, aims to accelerate the implementation of Delhi’s air pollution mitigation plan and advance the objectives of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).Ms. Gupta said the project will be implemented across all districts from September 2026 to August 2033. Of the total cost, 65% will be funded by the World Bank, while the remaining 35% will be borne by the Delhi government. A workshop will be held on July 10 to finalise preparations and strengthen coordination among stakeholders. “The workshop will define the roles of departments and agencies and chart a roadmap for timely implementation,” she said. The project will focus on key sectors, including transport, road dust, construction and demolition (C&D) waste, solid waste management, industry, green spaces, and water pollution. Ms. Gupta said the initiative is a long-term investment aimed at ensuring cleaner air, improved public health, and a more sustainable urban environment.According to a government statement, the project rests on two pillars. The first focuses on strengthening air quality management. A dedicated Project Management Unit (PMU) will be set up for implementation. Measures include developing advanced air quality monitoring systems, enhancing data analytics capabilities, and establishing an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC)-based monitoring framework. The plan also envisages improved inter-departmental coordination, collaboration with Indo-Gangetic Plain States, and the promotion of scientific planning, public awareness, training, and new technologies. The second pillar focuses on reducing emissions from major pollution sources. Steps include phasing out older, polluting vehicles, promoting electric vehicles, strengthening public transport, and developing an advanced Pollution Under Control (PUC) monitoring system to track vehicular emissions.
