The construction of the new bus terminus being proposed near the Velachery station of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) will soon begin, as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to call for tenders for the project. The new bus terminus project was initially mooted by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), which had prepared a blueprint for shifting the present bus terminus near the Vijayanagar junction in Velachery to the vacant land located south of the MRTS station. The residents have, for several years, been demanding that the bus terminus be shifted from the Vijayanagar junction, as the parking of buses on the road causes severe traffic congestion.GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran, confirming the status of the ₹36-crore bus terminus-cum-depot project, said a detailed financial feasibility report for the project was being readied. The civic body was also exploring the viability of taking up the project under the public-private partnership mode.Paucity of fundsA senior official of the MTC said the transport body had prepared a detailed project report (DPR) of the new bus terminus and sent a letter, dated May 15, to the GCC, requesting it to take up the project due to the paucity of funds. The MTC had cited the allotment of 6.67 acres of vacant land near the Velachery railway station, and sought the support of the civic body.It was pointed out that the bus terminus near Vijayanagar junction functions from the roadside, causing severe traffic congestion, operational difficulties, and inconvenience to commuters.Considering the rapid urban growth and increasing passenger demand in the locality, a permanent and well-equipped bus terminus-cum-depot would help provide better transport facility and ease traffic congestion, it said.R. Umakanthan, a resident of Puzhithivakkam, said that with the extension of the MRTS to St. Thomas Mount, the relocation of the bus terminus would give commuters the much-needed multi-modal bus transport option to access the Metro station coming up at Adambakkam.(With inputs Aloysius Xavier Lopez) Published - July 03, 2026 11:32 pm IST
