The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will complete the construction of an additional bus terminus at Island Grounds next month to accommodate south-bound MTC buses from the Broadway bus terminus.

Owing to traffic congestion on roads near Broadway and the temporary bus terminus in Royapuram, the officials of GCC, Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), and the traffic police decided to postpone the launch of bus services at the Royapuram terminus. The services for some of the bus routes to be operated from the Royapuram terminus were supposed to begin on Monday.

At a meeting in Ripon Buildings on Thursday, GCC officials decided to expedite the construction of the additional bus terminus on 2.25 acres of land at Island Grounds.

After a meeting with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, the civic body decided to use a portion of the land earmarked for parking lots for the facility.

GCC will build 20 bus bays at Island Grounds, and the MTC plans to operate 50% of the buses from the Broadway terminus here. As the area is inadequate to accommodate all south-bound buses, the traffic police, MTC, and GCC explored the feasibility of parking buses on wider roads in the area.
