Greece has signed the final major contract to begin the long-delayed modernization of its four MEKO-class frigates, formally launching a program to upgrade one of the Navy’s core surface combat fleets.

The General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments and Skaramangas Shipyards signed the agreement Thursday, completing the three main contracts of a program valued at roughly €600 million.

The modernization plan, first revived in 2019, was repeatedly redesigned to reduce costs and limit technical risk before reaching final approval. The frigate “Spetsai” will be the first to undergo the upgrade.

Earlier agreements were signed with Thales Nederland, which will supply a new NS100 AESA radar and fire-control sensors, and Greek firm SSMART, which will integrate ship systems with the TACTICOS combat management system.

Additional smaller contracts covering weapons and sonar systems are expected in the coming months.
