The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) has been tasked by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development with readying a proposal for construction of apartment-type flats in its properties in the upscale Race Course area, under rental housing scheme akin to the project executed at Kavundampalayam.For more than 10 years, no work was undertaken following the demolition of dilapidated structures - 108 houses in DFO Compound and 222 in Thomas Park Housing Unit.Chairing a review meeting in Coimbatore on Thursday, Minister for Housing and Urban Development P. Rajkumar directed TNHB officials to pursue the rental housing scheme project at Race Course in right earnest.According to the officials, the project will be executed at its two properties measuring 3.3 acres and 6.41 acres respectively.The TNHB, it is learnt, will shortly get the approval of Directorate of Town and Country Planning for the purpose.The TNHB anticipates overwhelming patronage for the proposed rental housing scheme project in the prime Race Course area. Almost all the 1,848 houses in the TNHB Kavundapalayam apartment complex with 14 floors, constructed at an expenditure of ₹512 crore during 2016, are under occupation, following the allotment made during 2021. “Barring 15 to 20 flats that are vacant owing to the shifting process, the rest have been under occupation,” a senior TNHB official said.At Kavundampalayam, 56 A-type flats (three bedrooms and 1,192.53 sqft), 294 B-type flats (two bedrooms and 920 sqft), 1,148 C-type flats (single bedroom and 761.27 sqft), and 350 D-type flats (single bedroom and 558.23 sqft) were constructed.Flanked by S. Prabhakar, Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Housing Board; Pavan Kumar G. Giriyappanavar, District Collector, Coimbatore; and senior officials of TNHB, Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB), and Revenue department, the Minister also reviewed the projects for construction of apartments for high income group at Ganapathy, for middle income group at Singanallur, rental housing schemes, residential flats and plots, saleable plots, and redevelopment projects, besides housing schemes at Pollachi and Seeranaickenpalayam.Officials submitted files pertaining to the status of land acquisition proceedings, compensation payable to landowners, compensation already disbursed, and pending issues that need to be resolved.The Minister directed TNUHDB officials to expedite the projects at CMC Colony in Ukkadam, Variety Hall Road, Ezhil Nagar, and other locations in the district, and instructed officials to prioritise petitions seeking basic amenities.
