A 39-year-old DMK functionary from Tiruvottiyur was arrested on Thursday for allegedly threatening a private real estate developer and demanding ₹20 lakh in connection with the construction of an apartment complex on Mastan Koil Street.The police said the accused, identified as V. Manikandan, is the DMK’s ward 8 secretary in Tiruvottiyur, and the son of former DMK MLA T.C. Vijayan.They also alleged that Manikandan demanded ₹25,000 for each flat being constructed and intimidated representatives of the company while obstructing the ongoing construction work. Following a complaint from the private developer, the Tiruvottiyur police registered a case against him and arrested him. He was remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is on.
