Jean Hanlon.
A court on the southern island of Crete on Friday convicted a local man of murdering his Scottish former partner more than 17 years ago, in a case that had initially been dismissed as a simple accidental drowning.
The 55-year-old was sentenced to 10 years in prison, after the court found that he had reduced criminal responsibility due to mental health issues, but was released pending hearing of his appeal.
Following a long and tireless campaign by the children of Jean Hanlon, 53, from Dumfries, the case was reopened leading to the suspect being charged in November. He denied wrongdoing.
Hanlon’s body was found floating in Iraklion harbour in March 2009, and was initially ruled accidental. But new forensic evidence and the reopening of the case led investigators to conclude that she had been murdered.
