European Commission shares snapshot of EU chemicals regulation ahead of legislative review
The European Commission has provided an update on its rolling list set out in its ‘roadmap’ for restrictions under the EU chemicals law, at a meeting of the expert group known as ‘Caracal’ on Thursday.
This review enables national experts and the EU executive to take stock of the state of play under the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation before proceeding with expected changes.
This third update to the roadmap, which was launched in April 2022, is divided into three parts: restrictions adopted since 2022; proposed restrictions currently under discussion; and, finally, substances for which the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is preparing opinions (such as PFAS), as well as those representing new or emerging risks.
Since 2022, 11 substances and substance groups have been restricted, including PFAS in firefighting foams, aprotic solvents, microplastics, and lead and its compounds in PVC.
