The Lower Bhavani Ayacut Nila Urimaiyalargal Sangam has urged the State government to expedite the proposed Pandiyar–Moyar river linking project to augment water availability in the tail-end reaches of the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal system. At an executive committee meeting held at the association’s office in Nasiyanur recently, under the chairmanship of its president, S. Periyasamy, the association adopted three resolutions on irrigation-related issues. The association urged the government to implement the Pandiyar–Moyar link project and resolved to explore all possible measures to improve water supply to the tail-end areas of the LBP ayacut. It also decided to organise a seminar with water resources experts at the end of August to discuss the issue. In another resolution, the association reiterated that, in keeping with the understanding reached before the implementation of the Athikadavu–Avinashi project, only the surplus water available during October and November should be utilised for the scheme so that irrigation under the LBP is not affected. The association also opposed any proposal to divert water to areas outside the notified ayacut under the guise of a “seepage water project.” It urged the government to ensure that water released from the Bhavanisagar Dam is confined to the notified command area of the LBP canal system up to its tail-end reaches.
