Water was released from the Bhavanisagar dam into the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) main canal at 8 a.m. on Friday for the second crop season, benefiting 1.03 lakh acres across three districts.

Officials of the Water Resources Department said the release would continue until April 30, 2026. Water will be let into the LBP main canal through the “odd”-numbered sluice gates and into the Chennasamudram canal through the “even”-numbered sluice gates. The supply is expected to benefit 1,03,500 acres of farmland in Erode, Tiruppur and Karur districts.

The release will benefit farmers in the Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam, Bhavani, Perundurai, Erode, Modakkurichi and Kodumudi blocks in Erode district, the Kangayam block in Tiruppur district, and the Aravakurichi block in Karur district. Initially, 100 cusecs of water was released into the canal, which will be increased in phases to 2,200 cusecs. Water will be supplied for 67 days, with intermittent stoppages totalling 44 days.

At 8 a.m., the water level in the dam was 97.11 feet, against the full reservoir level of 105 feet. The inflow was 154 cusecs, while the discharge comprised 100 cusecs into the LBP canal, 800 cusecs into the Arakkankottai and Thadapalli canals, and 100 cusecs into the River Bhavani. The storage stood at 26.52 tmc ft, as against the dam’s total capacity of 32.80 tmc ft.
