Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has secured a High Court victory after the University of Fort Hare's decision to deregister him from its Master's in Public Administration programme was set aside.
The Chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training, Tebogo Letsie, has welcomed a High Court ruling that set aside the University of Fort Hare's decision to deregister Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane from his master's degree programme.
The University of Fort Hare deregistered Mabuyane in 2021 after concluding that he did not meet the minimum admission requirements for the master's programme and that there were alleged irregularities in the process through which he was admitted.
The university argued that Mabuyane should have been admitted through a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process, but maintained that the required procedures had not been properly followed.
Letsie said the judgment paves the way for Mabuyane to continue his studies after what he described as an unnecessary interruption to his academic pursuits.
