Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as head coach of the German national football team, ending a tenure that began with genuine optimism and concluded with a historically embarrassing World Cup exit. The decision came on July 3, 2026, just days after Germany was knocked out in the round of 32 by Paraguay, losing 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
It was Germany’s first penalty shootout defeat in World Cup history, and marks the country’s third consecutive early exit from a major tournament.
